Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is defined as a painful condition of the hand and fingers caused by compression of the Median nerve in the tunnel at the wrist.

In the wrist there are 8 tiny bones that create the bottom of a tunnel, while a ligament called the Transverse carpal ligament makes up the upper portion. Together all of these structures create what we know as the Carpal Tunnel. The importance of this tunnel is that it houses the Median nerve. This nerve originates at the neck, travels down the arm, passes through the wrist at this tunnel, finally innervating the first 3 digits of the hand. This is also the ONLY nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel.

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, otherwise known as (CTS), is when pressure is exerted on the Median nerve, resulting in pain, numbness, or even tingling of the hand and fingers. The bones of the wrist can misalign (similar to the back and neck), pull down on the ligament, and disrupt the shape and size of the normal tunnel. This can be caused from trauma or even repetitive everyday motions, such as typing or lifting.

CAN YOU HELP ME?

Chiropractic is highly successful for treating CTS due to misalignments of the wrist and elbow. We excel in finding the misalignments that are responsible for the nerve compression and correcting them. This allows patients to return to normal daily activities once again without these debilitating symptoms.

Coastal Complete Care’s approach has helped many patients avoid unnecessary surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. Our staff works closely with each patient to accurately diagnose and treat the source of the issue. Before beginning treatment, patients will come in for an initial evaluation allowing our team to generate a customized treatment plan for the best care possible. This has made our practice a very popular location for treating CTS.

HOW DO YOU FIX IT?

The providers usually recommend non-invasive techniques, including:

  • Chiropractic Manipulation
  • Manual Therapy
  • Active Rehab
  • The Graston Technique
  • Pain Relieving Injections

Because every case is different, we may recommend additional, more advanced approaches, including nerve conduction studies, MRI’s, or Laser Therapy.
